Summer trends come and go, but some have stayed longer than others. We’ve seen garden bars take off, closely followed by outdoor kitchen ideas, but the new big thing we’ve had our eyes on are chic potting stations to aid our gardening.

Whether you’re looking to fill your garden with plants or simply want to take some rose cuttings, having somewhere to store small your garden tools as well as propagate, prune and pot plants makes gardening life that little bit easier.

DIY potting station upcycle

DIY enthusiast Michaela Shoebridge (who you can find on Instagram at @mishkashoe) had been looking to create a surface area for prepping and repotting her plants, along with some extra storage – but knew she wanted to do the project on a budget.

Taking some pre-loved cabinets, she upcycled them with paint and bought extra bits from both vintage and independent sellers on eBay to complete the look. ‘I’ve always made an effort to be more sustainable where I can, so the plan for this section of our unused garden was to create a little gardening station with the option to add a couple of raised beds to grow our own vegetables,’ she says.

Let’s look at how Michaela brought her vision to life…

Before

Michaela started by planning her garden and zoning it into sections, with one spot allocated to her new potting table area. The plain brick wall provides the backdrop, but it was fairly uninspiring to begin with.

‘The plan was to tackle the storage element first,’ she recalls, ‘and as this is a working corner, we had to make sure that whatever we decided to create would be practical and affordable. After all,

Revamp your kitchen on a budget: Smart strategies to save money on renovations

Revamp your kitchen on a budget: Smart strategies to save money on renovations
FURNITURE

The best value for your money doesn’t mean opting for a cheap alternative when planning a new kitchen.

No matter what your situation is, set a budget that will ensure you get the kitchen of your dreams.

Many kitchen renovations involve tearing out old cabinets, but to keep costs down, reuse what you can. With new doors and fittings, the cabinets will look as good as new if they are still in good condition.

As South Africans become more money-savvy, they are selling their old cabinets online, so you can pick up solid wood cabinets for a bargain. By giving old cabinets a makeover, you can save a fortune.

Homeowners now buy countertops online, realising they can sell solid granite or quartz ones to fund kitchen upgrades. Recutting and incorporating them into the new design saves money. Consider adding a statement island for added function and storage.

Stay within the lines

Remodelling and reusing existing space can solve many of the frustrations you have with your inherited kitchen.

The obvious merging of a dining and kitchen area could easily add two metres of extra space for a laundry nook or wall-in pantry. This will reduce costs and minimise disruptions.

Top tip: Unless it’s absolutely essential to drastically alter the design or layout of your kitchen, try and keep the sink, washing machine, dishwasher and stove in the same position.

If you plan on creating more kitchen space by adding on, make sure to link old and new spaces for a seamless flow. When you extend or add on, keeping your sink and appliances in the same position will help minimise electrical and plumbing costs.

Shop around for best buys

It’s so easy to fall in love with a beautiful designer kitchen without checking that it offers the best value for

AN interior designer shared three mistakes that she would personally never do.

She said she would never be caught dead putting decor in a “cluttery” place.

Taylee Hawkins (@spacesbytay) shared the interior advice with her TikTok followers.

“I would never leave hardware off of fake drawers,” she said.

“I just think it looks better to have hardware on all of your drawers in your kitchens,” she explained.

Moving deeper into the kitchen, she explained that she would be careful with the placement of appliances.

“I would never do two full double ovens with a microwave on top,” she said.

“Just because your microwave gets too high to where you can’t reach it.”

Last but not least, her final tip warned against making a space look too cluttery.

“I would never put decorations above my cabinets just because I think it looks cluttery,” she said.

People took to the comments to share their thoughts.

“Love it!! But won’t it get dusty above the cabinets? What do you suggest to do instead?” asked one commenter.

“You could always take the cabinets up to the ceiling,” Taylee replied.

“It’s harder to clean when there is decor up there so leaving it plain is easier!”

“Am sooo happy I saw this video, I just moved in my first house at 21 and didn’t know if I should put stuff on top of my cupboards!” said another.

“Thanks for the tip.”

Moving into an older house can add great touches of history and character to your day-to-day in your home. (Think: turning an original brass door knob to walk in to your apartment, treading up and down stairs with a 100-year-old banister, warming up next to an original marble fireplace — the dreamy decade-spanning list goes on!)

However, moving into a home that’s decades or even centuries old can also mean contending with outdated designs and design “upgrades” made over time that are markedly less aligned with your dream home aesthetic. But as this kitchen renovation proves, with a little handiwork, it’s possible to pay tribute to your home’s history while giving a space some welcome modern updates.

DIYer Morgan Pinch’s (@pinch_mor) house was built in 1912. But by the time she moved in, thanks to updates from previous owners over the past 111 years, her kitchen was mostly ’80s-inspired, from its beige tile and granite to its cherry-stained wood cabinets.

There were parts of the historic charm she wanted to keep, and other parts that were less charming. “I liked the layout and was obsessed with [the] stained glass window above the sink,” Morgan explains. “I didn’t love how dark the kitchen felt, even with multiple windows and overhead lights.”

With the help of her parents, Vicki and Clayton Pinch, Morgan set out to bring her kitchen into the 21st century with some fresh paint colors to make the room feel brighter while leaving its original layout intact.

To kick things off, the trio took the cabinet fronts off and removed all hardware. After deep-cleaning the cabinets’ surfaces, they de-glossed and primed

Metallic hardware makes a timeless accent in any part of the home, be it bronze handles on your kitchen cabinets, silver light switch plates in the living room, or gold-effect faucets for your bathroom sink. The problem with these metals, however, is that tarnishing is inevitable over time, and while some of us love the aged patina of antique hardware, others prefer a classic sparkly shine.

We hate to break it to you, but no amount of polishing, oiling, or buffing is ever going to restore a tarnished tap or rusted towel rail to its former glory. Worse still, these details aren’t cheap to replace, either. If you’re fed up with your tired-looking hardware but can’t afford to fit new fixtures, then fear not. We’ve found a budget-friendly DIY solution that’s suitable for all your needs – from your modern kitchen handles to your retro living room lighting – and it costs less than $13 at Amazon.

We’ve all had to endure doors with rusted hinges or taps with a discolored tinge at some point in our lives. After a certain amount of time it might be easy enough to overlook these imperfections, but, as the glistening jewelry of a room, our hardware does more for our spaces than you’d think, no matter how minor the detail, so keeping it shiny and bright is of vital importance.

There are plenty of preventative measures to keep your hardware in check such as polishing regularly with distilled white vinegar, but sometimes restoring it through cleaning is out of the question. That’s when this clever hack comes in handy, and it’s super cost-effective, too.

Kitchen Cabinet Demand, 2000-2021 (Million Dollars)

Kitchen Cabinet Demand, 2000-2021 (Million Dollars)

Dublin, July 03, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The “US Kitchen Cabinets Market 2023-2026” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

Demand for kitchen cabinets in the US is forecast to rise 2.9% annually to $20.9 billion in 2026, a deceleration from the 2016-2021 period as new housing construction and home remodeling normalizes following exceedingly high levels in 2021, and prices for materials used in the construction of cabinets (such as wood) recede from inflation- and supply chain-related highs in 2021 and 2022.

The gain will be supported by primarily by homeowners investing more money into kitchen renovation projects and opting for more high-end materials, in conjunction with interest among homeowners in using cabinets as both aesthetic and functional elements of their kitchens.

This study analyzes the US kitchen cabinet industry. It presents historical demand data (2011, 2016, and 2021) and forecasts (2026 and 2031) by product (base, wall, tall), market (residential, commercial, and vehicles and other markets), application (new and remodeling), and by region and subregion. Demand for all products is measured in unit terms and value terms. The study also evaluates factors that will influence kitchen cabinet demand and discuss key suppliers and market share.

Frameless Cabinets Growing in Popularity Due to Trends in Kitchen Cabinet Aesthetics

Frameless cabinets are gaining popularity as an alternative to face framed cabinets and are expected to grow more than twice as fast as face framed cabinet demand. Installations of frameless kitchen cabinets will be boosted by:

  • Modern design trends, which have gravitated toward more open kitchens with clean lines and minimalist appearances

  • The stock of homes with existing frameless cabinets increasing over time, meaning that many homeowners will continue to have these cabinets installed in their kitchens

Make your home a happy place, interior designer urges in new book

Posted on September 19, 2022September 19, 2022 By Maria J. Glover
HOME DECOR

In his new book, “The Designer Within: A Professional Guide to a Well-Styled Home,” interior designer John McClain suggests we ask ourselves, “What would make me the happiest when I walk into my home?”

Reviewing an advance copy (Gibbs-Smith, $45), I have to agree. That might be THE question.

What would make me the happiest? Coming home to people and pets dear to me, of course, in a place that’s clean and orderly — and pretty. I want to see objects and vignettes I love, pieces my husband and I have collected over time that tell stories.

“I want readers – whether homeowners about to embark on their first renovation or seasoned design professionals looking for new ideas – to come away feeling confident and inspired,” he writes.

Readers will want to give their whole home a makeover after looking through this inspiring 114-page tome, illustrated with photos of McClain’s own home, a “Modern Loft Bungalow,” and his other design projects, which range from traditional to contemporary.

“I did not want this to be just another pretty coffee table book,” McClain told me over the phone from his home in Los Angeles. “What I really want this book to do is to start a conversation, a discussion inside your own household that sparks change.”

I was eager to hear more.

Q. Every designer, including you, says to gather inspirational images from magazines or on a Pinterest board to form the foundation of your design. How do you go from that hodgepodge to a design plan?

A. You’re looking for inspiration. When you find something you respond to positively, whether a photo of a room, a rug or a piece of art or furniture, dig deeper. Analyze why you love it. Is it because it reminds you of a favorite
