An antique and collectable store in Kamloops is closing and liquidating all the treasures inside.

Store owner Peter Kalashnikoff was forced to close the doors of Harmonie Antiques and Collectables after a hike in rental costs for the building.

“There is nothing I can do,” he said. “The rent went up too high and the landlord doesn’t want to negotiate. It is disappointing. Lots of people are disappointed.”

Ones man’s pain is another one’s gain in this situation, where bargain hunters and antique lovers can find a wide variety of treasures on sale, anything from antique furniture to instruments to vintage comic books.

Kalashnikoff said he’s enjoying watching customers leave with smiles on their faces.

“The sale is going well, it is busy,” he said. “We have rare collectables and some reproduction stuff. We have everything. People like my Coca-Cola selection and I have a lot of First Nations stuff.”

The antiques have been brought in from flea markets and antique sales from various places in the province over the years.

Kalashnikoff has no plans in place for the future yet. He said his age and health issues prevent him from moving the collection to another location. He has until August to empty the building.

I started 2021 by buying an 1885 hulk of a home, sight unseen, with visions of restoring its earlier grandeur. In almost two years, I’ve restored three of many rooms and tackled multiple smaller projects, by myself.

Do-it-yourself home improvements can save a lot of money, but that’s hardly the only reason to dive in. One in 4 homeowners took on DIY home improvement projects over the past two years because they like doing that kind of work themselves, according to the recent NerdWallet Home Improvement Report. (That nationally representative survey asked 1,404 homeowners about their home improvement activities and sentiments, and was conducted online by The Harris Poll from Sept. 27-29, 2022.)

I count myself among them. The joy of this work was instilled in me at a young age by my dad, a former shop class teacher turned school administrator, and hobbyist carpenter. I even built my own Barbie house, a blue one-bedroom ranch.

June 2011 remains clear in my memory. I’d had a hectic school year teaching and was facing scans to monitor my cancer’s progression, so a summer project seemed like the perfect distraction. I had painted my bedroom a soft gray and updated the pine bedroom set we’d had for 10 years with cream-colored paint and updated gold hardware. The gold and gray pairing was magical. But I needed more: a statement piece. Something that had a story. Perusing Pinterest, I saw a photo of a pair of chandeliers over a bed.

After several days of surfing Craigs-list, I found a treasure in Huntington Beach—matching midcentury waterfall chandeliers. Until this point, I’d never owned a chandelier. It brought back memories of the one that gleamed over our formal dining table when I was a kid.

At $70 apiece, they were within budget. The address on the listing led me to a suburban “Leave It to Beaver”-style home, where I was greeted warmly by a middle-aged woman. A patterned scarf held back most of her hair, but a few blonde curls had wiggled free and lay glued to her dampened brow. She apologized for the stifling heat and invited me into a living room bursting with stacks of boxes. Her parents had passed away, she told me, and she was cleaning out her childhood home. She escorted me down the matted gold shag of the hallway to her parents’ bedroom, where the chandeliers hung in a naked room. The bed had left a dusty imprint on the carpet, and dingy curtains blocked all signs of the sun.

Even though she was moving into a rental apartment, Alexa d’Argence was eager to put her personal stamp on it.

“Loving my space is more important to me than my security deposit. So I just went for it with paint, shelves, window treatments and upgrading the medicine cabinet,” says d’Argence, who as a senior designer at BAR Architects in San Francisco knows something about creating a stylish space.

“My landlord actually appreciated the improvements. I’d say, consider changes that add value, and that wouldn’t be removed if you moved out,” she says.

Non-designers might not feel as comfortable doing that, since most rental agreements stipulate that you can’t permanently change anything. Another approach: Strike up a conversation with your landlord to talk about potential changes, and perhaps even offer to foot the bill.

Or, just make some temporary tweaks, little personal touches that can turn bland and basic into hip and homey with just a trip to the hardware store.

“Personalizing a rental is really easy these days; there are so many great accents that are designed to be temporary,” says Jessica Dodell-Feder, HGTV Magazine’s executive editor.

My husband and I recently brought our daughter back to college in the Southeast. Since she is a sophomore, most of her dorm décor was bought last year and was in storage, although right before we left we debated the merits of different mini fridges (the fridge has since been purchased and is happily in use).

Last summer, however, was a different story. My daughter spent considerable time planning her color scheme, determining her personal aesthetic, and deciding what she needed to feel comfortable and at home. She consulted with her roommates and watched plenty of YouTube videos made by other students regarding what they considered dorm room essentials.

My son, meanwhile, hung his Frisbee on a push pin and considered his decorating done. I am not exaggerating.

I suspect there are more college freshmen like my daughter than my son, which is one of the reasons the back-to-college business is not only booming but seemingly resilient to potential economic downturn. Back-to-school is the second biggest shopping season after Christmas, and it is growing. As reported in our cover story, total back-to-college spending is expected to reach $74 billion, the highest number ever reached in the National Retail Federation’s annual survey.
