A home is not complete without its exterior comprising of the same comfort and beauty as its interior. But, the key question is where does one start?

Frank Lloyd Wright once famously said, “Form follows function—that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” While the architect wasn’t specifically speaking about outdoor furniture, the same rules inherently apply. When designing your exterior space, be sure to source outdoor furniture that not only compliments your home’s architecture, but also checks off the fundamentals: Is it durable? How will it withstand the elements? Does it match your outdoor lifestyle?

Home Depot

To no surprise, Home Depot is a wonderful source for outdoor furniture. Not only does the brand have an expansive selection of outdoor pieces, such as this gazebo set ideal for patios, but also have a reasonable price point.

Front Gate

Frontgate excels in luxury furniture, but their outdoor selection is truly where one should set their eyes. Specifically, their dining sets, which are offered in a kaleidoscope of materials, colors, and finishes. Each are quite versatile for the setting they are placed in.

Massmart starts shutting unviable Game stores

Massmart, subject to a full buyout offer from parent Walmart Inc, has begun shutting down unprofitable and unviable Game stores across the country.

In December 2021, it announced that it had identified an “initial” “15 stores subject to a possible sale”. This followed the re-lay of 114 Game stores in the country, allowing the retailer to compare sales trends and potential.

Eight stores are now in the process of being shut down. It has begun aggressive markdowns on all stock at these stores, game.co.za/cp/game-store-closures”listed on its website.

The stores being closed include Bel Air (Northriding), Greenstone and Mall of the South in Johannesburg, the Cape Town CBD one, the Ulundi and Westwood Mall outlets in KwaZulu-Natal, the Gilwell store in East London and Game in Hazyview.

With very limited exclusions, discounts of up to 40% are being offered on all stock, with the closing down sales beginning at the end of last month already. A letter to customers regarding limits on other discounts and promotions is dated 24 August.

Clothing, camping equipment, laptops/computers, furniture and toys are all marked down by 20%, hand tools, hardware, air conditioning and fans by 25%, while heaters, electric blankets and stationery are less than 40%. Currently, the minimum discount storewide is 10%.

Game vice president Andrew Stein this month confirmed to the media that 10 underperforming stores would be closed.

In one of the stores visited by Moneyweb, even shop fittings and fixtures will be sold. A sign asks interested parties to leave their details with store management.

Twin Cities shoppers looking for savings and sustainability have lots of options thanks to the metro’s thriving thrift store scene.

Why it matters: With inflation on the rise and the climate impact of fast fashion, buying second hand is an easy way to save some money, lower your carbon footprint and shop for unique items.

The state of play: “Thrift store” is a catch-all term but there are several categories to note when searching for a place to shop.

Secondhand stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army sell almost anything for cheap.
Vintage stores have a higher price point and focus on older clothing, accessories and furniture in good/great condition.
Consignment shops sell upscale clothing, housewares and furniture in great condition.

Where to start: Go in with an open mind — it’s unlikely any store will have exactly what you’re looking for. Here are some of our local recommendations.

Tip: If you don’t mind digging through warehouse bins, check out theshop/find-store”Goodwill Outlets in St. Paul, Chaska and Brooklyn Park. All items are sold by the pound — typically under $3.

And: some thrift stores also give out coupons for your next purchase when you donate items, or have “deal days” with storewide discounts.

Worth noting: Many of these stores will buy your gently used goods, too.

Audrey’s thought bubble: I try not to shop at big thrift chains, and focus on smaller non-profit shops like Hidden Treasures, Old School by Steeple People and Flying Pig Thrift.

I’ve found that the prices are lower, the selection is more unique and the money you spend is going to a local cause.
